RESUMO

In this study, we first point out the possible acoustic problems associated with the post-pandemic operation of built environments. In particular, we focus on the problem of acoustic deficiency due to the lack of absorption. This deficiency, which is likely to be encountered in most enclosed spaces in a range of establishments, is due to the reduced number of audience members or users of the space as a result of social distancing. As one of the promising solutions to this problem, we introduce a sound absorption technique using three-dimensional (3D) space sound absorbers developed through our recent research projects. Significantly, the type of sound absorber proposed herein is made of materials that are especially suited to hygiene considerations. The materials are microperforated panels (MPPs) and permeable membranes (PMs), both of which are easily washable and sanitised. Furthermore, we point out that 3D-MPP or PM space absorbers possess the additional value of aesthetic designability.

RESUMO

Peptides are promising therapeutic agents for COVID-19 because of their specificity, easy synthesis, and ability to be fine-tuned. We previously demonstrated that a cell-permeable peptide corresponding to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Spike C-terminal domain (CD) inhibits the interaction between viral spike and nucleocapsid proteins that results in SARS-CoV-2 replication in vitro. Here, we used docking studies to design R-t-Spike CD(D), a more potent short cell-penetrating peptide composed of all D-form amino acids and evaluated its inhibitory effect against the replication of SARS-CoV-2 S clade and other variants. R-t-Spike CD(D) was internalized into Vero cells and Calu-3 cells and suppressed the replication of SARS-CoV-2 S clade, delta variant, and omicron variant with higher potency than the original peptide. In hemizygous K18-hACE2 mice, intratracheal administration of R-t-Spike CD(D) effectively delivered the peptide to the trachea and lungs, whereas intranasal administration delivered the peptide mostly to the upper respiratory system and stomach, and a small amount to the lungs. Administration by either route reduced viral loads in mouse lungs and turbinates. Furthermore, intranasally administered R-t-Spike CD(D) mitigated pathological change in the lungs and increased the survival of mice after infection with the SARS-CoV-2 S clade or delta variant. Our data suggest that R-t-Spike CD(D) has potential as a therapeutic agent against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

RESUMO

The mucus fluid vehicle is impacted by the synthetic response that changes the physical science of liquid due to the thickness of the bodily fluid. Additionally, various issues in the respiratory system might happen because of bodily fluid adequacy. A central point of transportation of immunizations to forestall COVID-19 is the concentration level expected during movement, stockpiling, and dispersion. The current review stated that mucus fluid transportation is restrained through magnetic force originating due to heat variation. Permeable channel over respiratory disease and chemicals due to mass reaction–diffusion variation. The bodily fluid development is surveyed by the force, energy, and diffusion condition influence of body powers because of attractive field, source of heat cause of thermal conduction, resistance due to disease chemical reaction cause of concentration profile. The nonlinear arrangement of incomplete differential conditions is addressed by the Laplace transform technique, and MATLAB programming outcomes are initiated for momentum, temperature, and diffusion fields and inferred that the bodily fluid stream decelerates due to magnetic force. The skin friction, Nusselt number, Sherwood number, and the microorganism's thickness are assessed and explained exhaustively. Furthermore, microorganisms are occupied in different elements to survey the mucus fluid mechanism. © 2022

RESUMO

The CO2 emission is enhancing drastically because of the continuous emission from industries and transport sector. Although the CO2 emission had decreased in the first half of 2020 by 8.8% due to COVID-19 restrictions however, it is again on the rise and it might exceed the estimated level in 2030. The current methods used for CO2 separation have serious operational and environmental constraints. To overcome these problems we have devised a supported ionic liquid membrane (SILM) incorporated with the blend of bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) of copper and magnesium ions (CuxMgx) and Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride [P66614] [Cl] ionic liquid (IL). CuxMgx MOF were synthesized and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). CuxMgx MOF with [P66614] [Cl] IL were immobilized on a flat sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. Single gas permeation tests of membranes loaded with 0.2/0.8 wt/wt% MOF/IL solution showed the highest CO2 permeability of 2937 Barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity of 33.26. The performance of SILM was also investigated with different water loadings of (30 wt % and 50 wt %) in addition to MOF/IL solution and at different feed pressure varying from 0.5 to 2 bars. Membranes showed enhancement in CO2 permeability to 3738 and 4628 Barrer whereas CO2/N2 selectivity decreased to 23.53 and 21.8 with membranes loaded with 30 and 50 wt % water, respectively, at a feed pressure of 2 bar. The gas permeation results show that the incorporation of CuxMgx MOF with IL in polymeric membrane enhances the CO2/N2 separation under humid conditions but slightly decreases CO2/N2 selectivity with an increase in feed pressure. The SILM synthesized in this research is highly viable for industrial flue gases because of the incorporation of phosphonium-based ILs that have high thermal stability. © 2022

RESUMO

Standard clinical care of neonates and the ventilation status of human patients affected with coronavirus disease involves continuous CO2 monitoring. However, existing noninvasive methods are inadequate owing to the rigidity of hard-wired devices, insubstantial gas permeability and high operating temperature. Here, we report a cost-effective transcutaneous CO2 sensing device comprising elastomeric sponges impregnated with oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (oxSWCNTs)-based composites. The proposed device features a highly selective CO2 sensing response (detection limit 155 ± 15 ppb), excellent permeability and reliability under a large deformation. A follow-up prospective study not only offers measurement equivalency to existing clinical standards of CO2 monitoring but also provides important additional features. This new modality allowed for skin-to-skin care in neonates and room-temperature CO2 monitoring as compared with clinical standard monitoring system operating at high temperature to substantially enhance the quality for futuristic applications.

RESUMO

The potential of nucleic acid therapeutics to treat diseases by targeting specific cells has resulted in its increasing number of uses in clinical settings. However, the major challenge is to deliver bio-macromolecules into target cells and/or subcellular locations of interest ahead in the development of delivery systems. Although, supercharged residues replaced protein 36 + GFP can facilitate itself and cargoes delivery, its efficiency is still limited. Therefore, we combined our recent progress to further improve 36 + GFP based delivery efficiency. We found that the penetration efficacy of 36 + GFP protein was significantly improved by fusion with CPP-Dot1l or treatment with penetration enhancer dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in vitro. After safely packaged with plasmid DNA, we found that the efficacy of in vitro and in vivo transfection mediated by 36 + GFP-Dot1l fusion protein is also significantly improved than 36 + GFP itself. Our findings illustrated that fusion with CPP-Dot1l or incubation with DMSO is an alternative way to synergically promote 36 + GFP mediated plasmid DNA delivery in vitro and in vivo.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of contemporary contact lens (CL) materials on human coronavirus attachment and the influence of a rub and rinse step to remove these viruses. METHODS: The binding rates of HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43 to eight soft CL materials and four rigid gas permeable materials were analyzed. The impact of a rub and rinse step to remove these viruses from all materials was examined. The efficacy of Biotrue (Bausch & Lomb), OPTI-FREE Puremoist (Alcon), Clear Care (Alcon) and cleadew (Ophtecs) to remove virus contamination from two representative soft lens materials (etafilcon A and lotrafilcon B) was also determined. RESULTS: Approximately 102 to 103 infectious viral particles were recovered from each CL material. Although some materials were more prone to coronavirus adhesion, contamination of both viral types was reduced to below the limit of quantification (LQ) from all materials using a simple saline rinse step. Exposure to Clear Care and cleadew reduced the number of infectious viral particles from both etafilcon A and lotrafilcon B to below the LQ, while for Biotrue and OPTI-FREE Puremoist, infectious viral particles were reduced to below the LQ only when additional rub and rinse steps were included. CONCLUSION: Human coronavirus contamination can be easily removed from CL surfaces. Although CL care products containing hydrogen peroxide and povidone-iodine efficiently removed virus contamination from CL surfaces without the need for a rub and rinse step, a full regimen including rub and rinse steps is crucial when using CL care products based on non-oxidative systems.
